The Holy City's Premiere High Voices Ensemble
ABOUT CANTORES CHARLESTON
Founded in January, 2019, by Judith and David Acres, CANTORES CHARLESTON is a
professional vocal ensemble that specializes in multiple genres of choral music from across
the centuries, composed and arranged especially for Soprano, Alto and Countertenor voices.
This choir transports audiences up to the very heavens!
Building on the successful tradition of their Cleveland-based high-voice ensemble,
Contrapunctus Early Music, David and Judith sought to bring the same glorious choral music
to audiences in the Southeast. The King's Counterpoint's Angel Voices concerts were so warmly
received in and around Charleston, South Carolina, that David and Judith decided to create another dedicated high voices ensemble to as a vehicle to highlight this increible choral repertoire
- not to mention some of the finest upper voices in and around the Lowcountry!
Though a new ensemble, Cantores Charleston has been established
on a firm foundation of choral excellence and experience.
Trained from the age of six in the English Choral tradition, David Acres, Musical Director and professional Countertenor, brings with him an extensive background in both the direction and performance of multiple genres of a cappella music. He was instructed in music theory, piano and voice by Lionel Dakers, Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral and Director of the Royal School of Church Music at Addington Palace, Greater London, and over the years David has founded and directed numerous successful ensembles throughout the UK, recording and making appearances across England, Northern Ireland, and Europe. He continues in his role of Musical Director for all three of Cantores Charleston's 'sister' ensembles: The King's Counterpoint (Charleston, SC), Contrapunctus Early Music (Cleveland, OH), and Counterpoint (Exeter, Devon, UK). Tenor, Countertenor and Assistant Director Gregory Pittman is an award-winning music educator whose choirs have earned Superior ratings in adjudicated festivals and whose students routinely earn acceptance into auditioned honor choirs throughout the Southeast. He is a 2017 GRAMMY Music Educator Award nominee, serves as President of the South Carolina Music Educators Association Choral Division, and has served as Adjunct Professor of Music at Charleston Southern University where he taught voice, music education, music appreciation, and directed CSU’s men’s choir. Executive Artistic Director
Dr. Judith Acres is a professional Soprano and educator, holding both Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Historical Performance Practices and having served as Adjunct Faculty in music history, vocal pedagogy, graduate research methodology and applied voice at The College of Charleston, Hiram College, and Case Western Reserve University, where she also directed the CWRU Women's Choir. In addition to founding Contrapunctus Early Music and co-founding The King's Counterpoint and Cantores Charleston with Mr. Acres, she is currently the Executive Artistic Director of Contrapunctus Early Music and The King's Counterpoint as well as Cantores Charleston and co-Manages Counterpoint (UK).
